Recording News
The latest demo remix session produced a good "95% mix" that sounds much better that the initial mix, which is great cause I wanted to get something/anything before band vacations start (Billy's already gone to Colorado, and I'm off to Hawaii on 9/8). Once done, the plan is to have a few different releases (so Billy can flaunt his several cover designs)- one CD with the three studio-produced songs ("Unprofessional", "Lightning Rod" and "Sandman") as our official "demo", another with those plus the ones I polished off at home ("You Let Me Fall" and "Wayfaring Stranger") as our first commercial mini-album release (date TBA) and who knows how many more once we get those pressed.

Set: Unprofessional - You Let Me Fall - Heart On A Platter - The Shivering Sand - The Sandman - I Fly Free - One Last Hallelujah - Windward Mark - Fatal Flaws - Pisces Lullabye - Wayfaring Stranger - The Lightning Rod - How Far Away - My Second Shipwreck - Lover You Should Have Come Over - Been Around The WorldWow, where to start? I really felt we were on tour for this one even though it wasn't far from home. To wit: we drove to Oxnard to get a new PA console, spent a lot of money on random stuff, lost time in traffic, got pulled over by the police in Carp, plus I sprained my ankle moving gear, and we still played a pretty good set. Thanks to Brandon for setting this up. The songs went well, especially "Fatal Flaws", which received its best Honey White performance. Some drunk guy always replaced our beers, and some other guy ordered a bass solo (hence the earlier position of "Lightning Rod") and gave me an I'm-not-worthy grovel before he took off. Attendance varied, but we passed the midnight deadline again with Jeff Buckley and Cracker songs, and Emily took a few photos too.

Remix The Bastard
The initial mix of the demo wasn't quite what we were looking for, so we're gonna have it done again, hopefully this week. It may have to be this weekend, though, cause of practice for a possible Friday night show in Isla Vista.

Well, sooner or later you'd have to have a stinker. No no, it wasn't that bad, and 5th out of 5 ain't awful, but the setting, timing, and lack of time to promote left us basically to perform a public rehearsal to a tiny crowd (but really any gig in I.V. is like this). We played a truncated set which was befouled by bad acoustics and a cramped space, which is I suppose what we deserve for not having time to plan how we were gonna go about things. Not that Shaun failed us, though- hell, it wasn't even his house.

The Hip Crowd opened for us with a good set. Nice guys, too, and we thank them much for letting us close their show. As it was, we played our best gig yet. After the quiet of Bogart's we were eager to let it rip, and several songs took off for the stratosphere before they slammed back down. I think "Lightning Rod" might have been the peak of the show. Andy from THC taped both bands with a little Walkman, and the tape is dominated by Bryn and Brian; a great performance and a terrible recording. Ah well. We hit everytthing almost perfectly, even though Billy might not think so (he was up top on a big drum riser)- but despite my show comas/amnesia I remember a good set. If that taught us anything it's that we've outgrown Isla Vista.
Bryn and I also finished recording vocals for the demo at Mark's on Saturday, and it will be mixed this week.

Gig Notes: Bogart's, Santa Barbara 8/8/02
Set: Wayfaring Stranger - The Shivering Sand - One Last Hallelujah - The Sandman - I Fly Free - You Let Me Fall - Heart On A Platter - Pisces Lullabye - Lover You Should Have Come Over
Last night's set at Bogart's went pretty well (according to us) and very well (according to the audience). Billy elected not to play, as he was afraid It would just be too loud, so the three of us played nine songs, including "The Sandman" in its official live debut and a reworked (that very day) "Pisces Lullabye", also receiving its Honey White live debut. We went on after sets by both Noelle Price and Earl, and then left the stage for an open-mike session. That turned out to be much better in terms of quality and participation than we initially expected, so we sat back, enjoyed it, and looked forward to a loud, messy show the next night in Isla Vista.
That's right- in other short-notice gig news, Honey White will be playing in Isla Vista tonight, August 9, with The Hip Crowd. Rumor has it they want to open for us, which is something else! Billy will surely be playing. The location is up in the air but it should be somewhere on Camino Del Sur.

HW Unplugged
For our third show Honey White will be playing an acoustic show tonight at Bogart's in Santa Barbara, 1114 State Street (near State & Figueroa in La Arcada plaza). We will begin at 7:30 pm or thereabouts. Earl and Noelle Price, among others, are on the bill, and we joined on very short notice, but the opportunity kind of fell into our lap so we're going to take it. Though the novelty of seeing a loud rock band play their material acoustically has been utterly passe since oh, 1993, we think that the novelty of seeing Honey White do this will be very exciting, and we hope to see y'all there.
In recording news, "The Lightning Rod" is tracked. Bryn and I will finish the vocals on "Unprofessional" and "The Sandman" as soon as Mark gets over his phobia of working on weekends. Brian and I have already set down some guitar tracks for "You Let Me Fall" at home as well.

Guerilla Sequencing
We're going in to wrap up the demo session tomorrow in another marathon Saturday session for vocals and overdubs. Mark had been ill and we need to spring our intentions for the inclusion of "You Let Me Fall" on him when he’s nice and healthy. It's time to book gigs- we're getting antsy to play out...
